Product development
A successful plant-based product starts with the right combination of taste, texture, nutritional value and application.
Our product developers work with you from the very first idea. We develop new concepts, optimise existing products and explore which ingredients and production technologies best match your requirements.
We look beyond the recipe itself. Production, scale-up and packaging are part of the development process from the start.

Production of vegetarian and vegan products
From burgers and meatballs to nuggets, schnitzels, falafel and other plant-based concepts. Different products require different production technologies.
Across our production sites, we have access to technologies including:
- Mixing & emulsifying
- Forming
- Coating
- Marinating
- Tumbling
- Cooking
- Frying
- Freezing
Our broad network gives us the flexibility to match the production technology, production line and capacity to your requirements.

Additional production technologies for coated, filled and tempura products
New technologies create room for new ideas.
Our production capabilities now include additional technology for coating, tempura and filled products. Options include coating in up to four stages, predust and dipper technology, and tempura.
Coated & crispy
Want to give your plant-based product a crispy bite? Different coating technologies offer plenty of scope to vary texture, flavour and appearance.

Filled plant-based products
Filled plant-based products are also among the possibilities. Think of a plant-based Cordon Bleu or your own concept with a surprising filling.
Tempura
Tempura adds another way to vary bite and appearance. An interesting option for QSR, foodservice and snack concepts, among others.

Organic plant-based products
Want to combine plant-based and organic? Schouten offers various options for organic meat alternatives.
These include:
- schnitzels
- Cordon Bleu
- nuggets
- various falafel varieties
The relevant production site holds SKAL certification.
Do you have a specific recipe, application or target group in mind? Our product developers are happy to explore what is feasible.

Packaging that fits your market
Packaging for retail, meal kits, foodservice and bulk
The right packaging depends on your product, volume and sales channel. Schouten offers various packaging options for consumer products, foodservice and industrial applications.
Retail and meal kits
For consumer products, we offer several packaging formats. These include top-seal packaging, packaging for frozen products, film bags and flow packs.
Flow packs are particularly suitable for retail and meal kits, where compact, portioned packaging fits the application well.
Foodservice
For foodservice, we offer film bags and foodservice boxes. The boxes are available fully printed or plain and hold approximately 2 to 4.5 kg.
Industry
For larger volumes, 10 kg bulk boxes and crates are available. Depending on the product and application, foodservice boxes may also suit industrial customers.
Together, we identify the packaging solution that best fits your product, volume and logistics process.

GFSI-certified production sites
Only the best production partners work with Schouten
We are proud of the production sites we work with to manufacture our vegetarian and vegan range. All sites are GFSI-certified and equipped with extensive professional production lines. Thanks to our broad network, we have access to a wide variety of production and processing technologies. This gives us the flexibility to select a production site that matches your product, required technology and capacity.
Production sites with a focus on plant-based
Our production sites maintain strict separation between vegetarian and vegan products and other products.
Some sites even produce plant-based products exclusively. This offers additional opportunities for customers who value a production environment with a strong focus on vegetarian and vegan products.

Quality control at our production sites
At Schouten, we monitor the quality of our production partners as closely as we would at our own production sites. Our R&D team attends trial production runs, while Quality Assurance oversees the first packaging run of new plant-based products.
We also take a sample from every production batch for evaluation and analysis. This gives us close control over quality throughout development, production and packaging. Additional certifications are available depending on the production site. The production site in Deventer, for example, holds IFS Higher Level and SKAL certification..

Efficient and more sustainable plant-based production
Our production capabilities continue to evolve. Automation and data-driven planning help us further optimise production processes and create opportunities to reduce line losses, product waste, energy consumption and overproduction.
For packaging, we also consider material use, recyclability and recycled content together with you, while maintaining a strong focus on product protection, shelf life and ease of use.
This is how we connect product development, production and packaging with your sustainability objectives.
